Seasonal Packaging – that lasts

Retro vintage designs are never more evident than at Christmas time. These designs can be found on packaging in every supermarket throughout the country. Nostalgia being one of the key selling points at Christmas got me thinking about the packaging, especially the tins we used to keep in our own kitchen cupboard. They were almost always gifted at Christmas and used for years to store cakes and biscuits. ‘Jacob’s Afternoon Tea’ and ‘Cadbury’s Roses’ were ubiquitous in Irish homes.

This year, Cadbury’s reissued an old design – a vintage ‘Roses’ tin to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of ‘Cadbury’s Roses’. It’s perfectly vintage with its coloured roses, ribbon-style banners with the ‘Cadbury Roses’ blue background. It looks and feels much more special than a plastic tub and it’s likely that the decision to opt for this metal packaging was due to its sustainability. What’s not to love?

Jacob’s and Cadbury became household names in an era when many of their peers hadn’t really considered the impact of great branding and packaging design. They obviously did, and their brands are still here today. Seasonal packaging, when generic enough not to look too ‘Christmassy’ but vintage enough to evoke nostalgia can work for your brand any time of year and like those old tins, (to quote another household name) they’re “not just for Christmas”, they’re classic and sustainable.
